Grizzlies celebrate students' commitment to healthy habits during Get Fit Achievement Day
More than 300 fourth and fifth grade students from Memphis City and Shelby County Schools gathered at FedExForum earlier this month to participate in the Second Annual Get Fit with the Grizzlies Achievement Day sponsored by Turner Dairies, Coventry Healthcare, Memphis Heart Clinic, Cargill and the Memphis Grizzlies Charitable Foundation. The annual event celebrates students who complete a six-week challenge to stay active, eat right and make healthy choices in life.
Students began their day by warming up and stretching with Grizzlies Dance Team members. Parents and students enjoyed a brisk Get Fit walk around the Terrace Level at FedExForum. Several Mid-South sports teams and organizations including Golf Pro John Willoughby, the Crichton College Volleyball Team, Memphis Redbirds, and YMCA Kid Fit provided a hands-on opportunity for students to learn about their areas of expertise. Many special guests participated in workout stations with the students including Air Grizz, 'Dr. Bear' of Coventry Healthcare, and Sheldon, the Riverkings' mascot.
Health screenings to check cholesterol levels, body mass index, dental assessments, vital signs and vision testing were provided to each student by Well Child Health Screening and the Memphis Shelby County Health Department.
Sam's Club and Turner Dairies provided all who attended a healthy snack featuring fresh fruit and milk to all attendees
