Crittenton leads Tech to big win
ATLANTA -- Javaris Crittenton didn't let a split lip spoil his night. The Georgia Tech freshman point guard suffered the injury less than two minutes into the game, sat out briefly, then went out and scored 22 points and added nine assists to lead the Yellow Jackets to a 75-61 victory over Wake Forest. After the game three stitches were needed close the gash in his lip.
Thaddeus Young added 17 points for Tech to keep the Yellow Jackets' hopes for an NCAA tourmament bid alive.
"I don't speak about that too much. I just hope we get in. That's our goal," said Javaris Crittenton, who shrugged off the lip injury, adding that it has happened four other times.
Tech (6-7 ACC, 18-9) won for the fifth time in six games.
Wake Forest (4-10 ACC, 13-14), which had a two-game winning streak end, was led by freshman Anthony Gurley, who came off the bench to score a career-high 24 points. Kyle Visser added 15 points for the Demon Deacons.
"We're playing more like ourselves. We're playing hard on defense," said Javaris Crittenton. "We're an overall better team than we were a month ago."
The Deacons overcame an early 17-point deficit to cut the margin to 56-52 on a 3-point basket by Jamie Skeen with 8:02 left. Tech, however, responded with a 9-0 run for a 65-52 lead on a basket by Young with 4:07 left, and Wake Forest never got closer than 11 points after that.
"The game was getting out of hand (when Wake cut the margin to four). I just tried to settle the team down," said Javaris Crittenton
