Lakers Sign Free Agent Sniper Karl Months After Cancer Treatment
El Segundo, CA (AHN) - The NBA may have a new father-son combination in the league next season after the Los Angeles Lakers signed free agent guard Coby Karl, son of Denver Nuggets head coach George Karl, on Tuesday.
Karl, a 6-5 guard, played with the Los Angeles Lakers summer league team where he averaged 12.2 points and 1.8 rebounds per game in five contests this summer.
Karl, who was not selected in this year's NBA draft, has undergone two different bouts with cancer already in his young life.
He had his thyroid removed in 2006 and chemotherapy following his junior season at Boise State. Most recently, he had cancerous lymph nodes removed. Two and a half months later, he was playing in the Summer League for the Los Angeles Lakers.
Karl averaged 14.8 points, 4.1 rebounds and 4.0 assists as a senior at Boise State last season, numbers that earned him first team All-WAC honors.
Karl is Boise State's all-time leader in games played (127), 3-pointers made (266) and ranks third in school history with 1,698 points.
With last year's starting point guard Smush Parker recently departing via free agency, Karl will be competing with rookie Javaris Crittenton, Jordan Farmar, Sasha Vujacic and Maurice Evans for playing time as a back-up in the Los Angeles Lakers' backcourt.
