Set lineup helps Grizzlies
The Grizzlies entered Monday night's game against Atlanta on one of their best rolls of the season.
They were winners of four of their last eight games which included an improbable victory on the road against the Los Angeles Lakers. Their newfound success came with increased offensive production and an improved defense.
Unfortunately, neither of those things were existent in their 116-99 loss to the Hawks at FedExForum.
During their eight games prior to Monday, the Grizzlies were averaging 106.5 points a game, up from their season average of 100.2. In their 19 games before that, the Griz were averaging just 95.4 points and were 2-17.
The increased offensive production allowed the Grizzlies to win back-to-back games against New York and Sacramento, a feat they hadn't accomplished since the final two games of last season.
''I think having a set lineup has helped,'' Grizzlies coach Marc Iavaroni said. ''I think guys have locked into the importance of playing together as a unit defensively and getting back together, for the most part. I think guys have settled into their roles overall and they know what's expected of them. That takes time after a major trade, and with Mike Miller being out for eight games.''
Rookie impressing
Rookie guard Javaris Crittenton has been taking advantage of his increased playing time as of late. In his four games leading up to Monday night, Crittenton was averaging 10.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.8 assists on 53 percent shooting from the floor, while his playing time had increased to 23 minutes a game.
In his first nine games after being acquired from the Los Angeles Lakers in the Pau Gasol trade, Critteton was averaging just 3.9 points on 31 percent shooting.
''Javaris is getting more and more comfortable with the NBA game,'' Iavaroni said. ''He knows he can score. It's easier when you're not in crowds. He's learning how to understand the risks and rewards of taking it in there and making a shot, and taking it in there and turning it over.
''He's got creativity. He's got a knack for getting to the basket and finishing.''
Javaris Crittenton said he's just trying to finish up the season strong.
''I'm trying to rebound, get a few assists, do whatever I can to help the team. That's what it's about. It's not about playing the point, playing the two, just getting minutes on the floor and trying to be productive.''
